Unfaithful Monarchs: lovers and illegitimate sons in the Crown of Aragon from Ramon Berenguer IV to James II (1131-1327)
Abstract
In this piece, I offer, first, a bibliographic survey of earlier work on royal sons and lovers, showing how analysis of new sources and archival research can extend the established corpus. Secondly, I analyse the category of “lover”, exploring when monarchs were said to have taken a lover, whether during the life of their wives or otherwise, how these lovers were treated both while the king was alive and after his death, and royal attitudes to illegitimate offspring.
