The war capacity of the military orders in Spain. Assessment and qualifications

Keywords: Military orders, medieval warfare, military qualification, recruitment, military training

Abstract

Hispanic military orders, in spite of the limited number of troops that provided, played an undeniable role in the frontier war against Islam, and an increasing number of studies are devoted exclusively to study this essential function. However, there are some assumptions about their military capacity that should be clarified attending to their complexity. This article aims to explain the military qualification of the orders, to determine whether they had specific operational capabilities, what their real effectiveness in combat was, and what sort of positive image they projected in regard to their role in materializing the ideology of reconquest.
