Peace and the king in the records of the Courts of Castile (14th and 15th Centuries). Political lexicon and rhetorical argumentation

Keywords: Peace, Political culture, Conflict, Crown of Castile, Late Middle Ages, Monarchy, Propaganda

Abstract

The present article reflects on the reasons why the rhetoric and lexicon of peace have been largely neglected by Spanish historiography, despite the strong historiographical focus on the political culture of Castile in the late Middle Ages. It explains the mechanisms of the discourse of peace as well as the reasons for its use. Finally, it proposes which parameters should be employed for analysing the peacemaking rhetoric, taking into account the dialectic between kings, cities and nobility in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when the Courts played a defining role.
