Marseille against “abominables Catalans”: an urban implementation of privateering in the Mediterranean Sea (1380-1431)
Abstract
From the 1420s onwards, privateer armaments from Marseille increased significantly in the Mediterranean Sea. This phenomenon was undoubtedly related to the trauma caused by the plundering of Marseille in November 1423, by the troops of Alfonso the Magnanimous. From a Provencal point of view, this catastrophic event provided the necessary justification for arming ships against the Catalans. Through the archives of Marseille and those of the Crown of Aragon, we will study the phases, issues and actors of the Marseille privateering between 1380 and 1431
