The Community of "Peraires" in the City of Valencia. From Disaggregation to Confraternal Union (1340-1511)
Abstract
This essay deals with the systems of corporative organisation in Valencian wool industry during the Late Middle Ages. It covers from the establishment of the first wool workers (peraires) confraternity and its subsequent division into laborers’ and masters’ confraternities during the second half of the fourteenth century, to the unification processes of 1444 and 1477, when all working conditions were integrated in the same professional structure (mestres, macips, and exempts). By studying in detail the different associations of pelaires we define the dynamics of this important guild of the Valencian textile sector, as well as its acquisition of new competences.
