Trades and the Converted at the "Germanía" of Valencia (1458-1519)

Keywords: Jewish conversions, Conversos, Corporations by trade, Germanías of Valencia, Guilds, Confessional minorities

Abstract

This article offers new data on the incorporation of Jewish converts, conversos, in the Valencian urban society between 1458 and 1519, being a continuation of other previous works. The analysis of the documentation about trades and municipal corporations reiterates the insertion of the minority in the structures of citizen sociability, as evidenced by prosopographic analysis and life stories. The wide presence of the conversos in professional activities and in public life, traced in the elaborated censuses for different purposes, made possible their insertion in the popular movement of the Germanía of Valencia.
