THE CONSCIENCE CLAUSE IN THE NEW ECOSYSTEM OF THE MEDIA AND THE COMMUNICATION
Abstract
Digital media are shaping a new landscape that involves changes in the exercise of journalism. The subject
of this article is the conscience clause in Spain, in the context of global transformations of the media
system. The origins of the institution as well as its incorporation into Spanish law are reviewed and the
assumptions on which it is made are analyzed. Finally, are presented a number of issues related to
technological changes in the media system that are affecting the delimitation of the conscience clause and
that are forcing a review of the institution in this new context.
