Enrique Álvarez López (1897-1961). A lifetime engaged with science, overshadowed by “inner exile”
Abstract
This paper aims to rescue professor Enrique Álvarez López (1897-1961) from oblivion. During the 20th century he spent most of his life teaching and researching in the sphere of Natural Science. Influenced by a remarkable generation of Spanish intellectuals and scientists that underwent after the Civil War and under Franco´s dictatorship political repression either as exiles abroad or inside Spain. As an outstanding historian of Spanish naturalists and botanists he collaborated very actively with the Royal Garden and editor of its Bulletin. He is also considered a forerunner of ecology in Spain.
