[en] Participatory citizen information through WhatsApp
Abstract
This research identifies and analyzes manifestations of participatory citizen information, through WhatsApp. An exploratory study, carried out on a random, non-representative sample of selected urban communities, from three alternative media in selected urban communities: Eje Central and Emisora La Buena 95.4 FM in communes three and four of the municipality of Bello, Valle de Aburrá, and Mi Comuna Dos, in commune two of the city of Medellín (Colombia). The qualitative research technique in the selected communities, was done by non-participatory observation, a semi-structured random population survey, and structured interview with leaders of the selected media were carried out. The field work was carried out between October 2018 and June 2019. The results reveal the incipient use that the citizens of the chosen sectors make of WhatsApp, among other digital platforms, to disseminate their information processes. The results, based on the cases analyzed, show the progressive growth of a new practice of participatory information, through the digital informational paradigm. However, is detected in these communities the lack of a planned strategy for managing digital platforms, for purely informational purposes, such as WhatsApp and others. Finally, they are invited to support new manifestations of participatory media activism, from citizen voices to claim the right to their visibility and leadership, based on their own daily life.
