Thinking: programme information obsolescence versus the criteria of novelty, proximity or public interest

Keywords: programmed information obsolescence, media obsolescence, communication theory, the news business, professional routines

Abstract

Programmed information obsolescence is a term first mentioned by Jurado (2023) in the publication La Mirada mediática. Una revisión de la actualidad desde las Teorías de la Comunicación and refers to the conscious expiration that is practised in the media by its companies and professionals. According to this concept, business criteria take precedence over the interests of the subjects in order to shorten or lengthen the duration of the dissemination of the subjects. In this new book on information obsolescence, researchers and professionals analyse and criticise this system, which leaves fundamental aspects of the functions of journalism and communication in the background: novelty, proximity or public interest, for example.
