Abstract

The research group «Study Seminar for Social and Educational Intervention» (SEPISE, acronym in Spanish) from the University of Granada, together with the firm Dinamika S.L., undertook a case study in 2006 focused on the impact that the new «Law for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy and Assistance to People with Disabling Conditions» could have on employment within the rural environment in the Andalusian province of Granada. Given the characteristics of the municipalities under study, the Home Health Care Service occupied a central point in this research. The resulting data of this study highlights the serious employment insecurity suffered by many women who were working as home health aides in the homes of people with disabling conditions during the time of the case study. This study tackles some of the aspects influencing both the development of the profession of these female workers as well as their social and personal relationships in their environment and related to this and without forgetting the enormous complexity of the context, the way these peculiarities which take on gender representation produced within the field of professional close care or home health care may contribute, to a large extent, in converting this employment niche into a marginalized one of social exclusion.
