The family setting and scholastic dropout: the Social Work Faculty at the University of Colima, Mexic
Abstract
Conceived of as two formative institutions for the individual, family and school have a dialectic relationship in the educational development of students. However, changes occurring in the family setting can have an impact on individuals in the educational environment, as in the case of students dropping out of the educational programme of the social work degree at the University of Colima. Factors triggering scholastic dropout included a lack of moral and financial support from parents, siblings, aunts and uncles and grandparents, changes to the family structures in which they developed, unemployment affecting the individuals who provided the students with resources, and unplanned and high-risk pregnancies.
