The Royal Chancery of Valladolid in Medina del Campo and Burgos (1601-1606)
Abstract
The Royal Chancery of Valladolid was one of the main institutions of the Crown of Castile during the Old Regime. Although it maintained its headquarters in Valladolid permanently from the year 1442, the transfer of the Royal Court from Madrid to the city of the Pisuerga river between 1601 and 1606 would mean moving the court to Medina del Campo first, and then to Burgos, to return definitely to Valladolid. In this article, the details of such transfers are detailed and their causes and consequences are analyzed, both for the court and its members and for the aforementioned cities, as well as the functioning of the Castilian high court of justice during these years.
