Don Tomás Muñoz Romero, medievalist and historian of Law
Abstract
The life and work of Tomás Muñoz y Romero is studied in depth. After a brief summary of his life and academic training, his relationship with the three institutions that marked his professional career is analyzed in detail: the Royal Academy of History (RAH), the National Historical Archive (AHN) and the Higher School of Diplomacy (ESD). The work undertaken in these institutions is highlighted and analyzed, as well as his publications, closely related to the work he carried out in each one of them. It is worth highlighting his work organizing the disentailed ecclesiastical funds gathered in the RAH, the seed of the AHN created in 1866, where he was its first director. Likewise, he was the first professor of Paleography at the ESD where he formed a series of disciples who continued his work, both at the AHN and at the ESD. He can be considered as one of our early medievalists and historians of law, fields in which he was a pioneer in many respects.
