Legal ideas in the work of L. Iunius Moderatus Columella
Abstract
This study analyzes the legal background that underlies the literary production of Columella, an author usually seen from a technical or economic perspective exclusively. His training, as well as the political and intellectual atmosphere of his time, are closer to Roman law and classic jurisprudence, those being the clues to contextualize Columella’s contribution on agriculture. At the same time, the legal scenario of his time is reflected on the work of the Gades writer, so becoming a very valuable source for the study of Roman law, especially on property, slavery and marriage.
