The legal protection of archaeological goods in papal Rome: From Rome’s Sacco to the French rule (1527-1795)
Abstract
This article is a synthesis of a doctoral work devoted to the interest for the remains of the past and their knowledge as well as the beginning of the legal protection of the Papal State’s archaeological heritage. Therefore, this is a first delivery which will be continued further. The Papacy’s reaction to Rome’s Sacco and the mediated protection that was put in place, highlighting the creation of the Commissario dell’Antichità, the first authority created in Europe for the control of archaeological excavations, findings and exports, are analyzed here. The Proibizioni and Editti issued for control of archaeological objects from 1527 to 1795 are also analyzed.Downloads
