Abstract

This text article analyzes the ambivalent relationship between the social work and social services system. First, the objectives of social work (as scientifically founded social action of proximity) and of social services (management of benefits and prevention, rehabilitation and support services in situations of serious need and vulnerability) are defined, from their socio-historical genesis. After, changes in the practice of social work are analyzed, emphasizing in its logic of proximity and care, as well as its structural limitations. Social work is also considered from the logic of social investment, considering the double characteristics of policies support as well as demand for self-control and performance on the part of vulnerable people. Finally, this paper asks what challenges social work will face in the coming years under the framework of societies in which job insecurity and exclusion they have spread and entrenched.
