The dream job. Vocation and sacrifice in the video game industry

Keywords: capitalism, creativity, vocation, work, video games, control, autonomy

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the reasoning that gives meaning to the dream of obtaining a job that combines the fulfilment of a personal vocation with a well-regarded professional development. Using the video game industry as a reference, qualitative research based on the application of 25 interviews is proposed. Engaging with the interest that Sociology of Work has given to the issue of control, this study examines how the pursuit of this ideal is embedded in complex and contradictory dynamics of organizational management. Although the literature points out that the success of these management models relies on their ability to foster a perception of autonomy among workers, the discourses analysed reveal a widespread sense of frustration, linked to the difficulty of imagining genuine spaces of autonomy where individuals can express their passion and achieve self-fulfilment in their work.
