Monumental landscapes: spatial analysis of the defensive structures in the Baroña hillfort (Porto do Son, A Coruña)

Abstract

The selection of specific locations for Iron Age hillforts in the North-west of the Iberian Peninsula, along their material constitution and their internal organisation are proposed to be determined by an apprehensive quality of space and not only by productive or defensive needs. We apply a methodology based on geospatial analysis to assess the defensive devices of hillforts, relying on the site of Baroña as our case study. The results lead us to suggest that the morphology and location of the site, together with the poliorcetica of its defensive system, respond to the inhabitants' search for a perception of security. This would be related to a building tradition inherited from a conflictive past prior to the Iron Age.
