Towards a Definition of the 'Iberoroman' Sequence of the Plaza de Armas de Sevilleja (Espeluy-Bailén): New Interpretative Proposals for an Exceptional Settlement of the Upper Guadalquivir (Jaén)

Abstract

The Plaza de Armas de Sevilleja (Espeluy-Bailén) archaeological site is of exceptional significance within the scientific literature on recent prehistory, particularly in the context of the Bronze Age. Nevertheless, the material culture of the site indicates the existence of a broader chronological sequence, encompassing a phase that has been defined as 'Ibero-Roman'. This article will focus on the analysis of the latter period, in which this settlement, linked to the Roman city of Cantigi, played a decisive role in the territorial articulation of the Rumblar and Guadiel river valleys, the southern foothills of the eastern Sierra Morena and the upper-middle course of the Guadalquivir. To this end, an analysis has been conducted of the material and contexts excavated during the archaeological intervention conducted in 1985 by the Peñalosa Project, as well as the systematic surveys conducted recently.
