My Lai Massacre and Its Impact on American Protest Song: A Musical Referendum on Vietnam War?

Keywords: My Lai, William Calley, music, protest songs, Vietnam war

Abstract

The massacre of Vietnamese civilians in the hamlet of My Lai in March 1968 by American troops under Lieutenant William Calley generated mixed reactions in American society. American music was not immune to this trend and this action was soon reflected in various protest songs that exonerated or supported the behavior of the American troops. The objective of this article is to compile these compositions and analyze their lyrical contents in order to classify the works from a thematic point of view. Ultimately, this will allow us to identify the composers' positioning towards American participation in the Vietnam War and its perspective about the conflict
