Abstract

The incipient mass media, born at the end of the 19th century, were one of the main instruments used by the European metropolises to publicise the newly incorporated territories in Africa. Spain was no exception and, especially through the cinema, it began to shape an image of those distant territories and their inhabitants for the public. A good example is Hermic Films' Guinea series (1944-1946), analysed in this article with the aim of reflecting on the image that the Spanish mass media gave of Guinean women, in what contexts they inserted them, what aesthetic models they established and how they could have influenced the perception that Spaniards had of the unknown inhabitants of the African colonies.
