Proto-Celtic *bedo- ‘ditch, mine’ and its derivaties: new insular and continental evidence
Abstract
The Celtic protoform *bedo- ‘ditch, mine’, a result noun derived from the PIE verbal root *bhedh(h2)- ‘to dig, burrow’, enjoyed some productivity in Celtic languages both insular and continental and in the realm of common and proper nouns alike. In the present article, we aim, firstly, to compile a critical derivational history of all these inherited Celtic voices and, secondly, to add to this extensive list other forms that have not so far been analysed as derivatives of *bedo-, thus extending our knowledge of the language, theonomy, and material reality of the Celts.
