Echoes of the Odyssey in Mare Nostrum by Blasco Ibáñez
Abstract
This paper studies the echoes of the Odyssey in the novel Mare nostrum by Blasco Ibáñez, which transposes motifs and characters from the epic in a story with multiple Homeric evocations set in the Mediterranean (Valencia, Barcelona and Naples, among other places) in the context of the First World War. Blasco's narrative establishes a network of correspondences with the Homeric model that enriches the text in an allusive game of similarities and contrasts. Within this framework, the novel inverts the meaning of the plot and its outcome in relation to the themes of betrayal and punishment in the Odyssey.
