The Tetrastichs dedicated to Saint George by Theodore Prodromos: critical edition
Abstract
The present article consists of the first critical edition of the cycle of iambic tetrastichs dedicated to Saint George, composed by Theodore Prodromos in the 12th century. The edition is based on the testimony of the three sole known codices that currently contain the literary composition either in full or in fragments, namely, Codex Vat. gr. 1126, partially publilshed by Miller (1857), Codex Vat. gr. 1702, which contains only the first lines of the composition, edited by Giannelli (1960; 1963), and Codex Bold. Roe 18, which contains the complete cycle of tetrastichs and is being used for the first time in the present edition. The Greek text is accompanied by a comparative analysis of the manuscripts, which reviews and completes the stemma proposed by GIannelli in his study on the Tetrastichs on the Great Martyrs Theodore, George, and Demetrius by Theodore Prodromos, among which the cycle edited here is located. In addition, a study on the text is included, encompassing a proposal of the possible sources used by the author for the creation of his verses, as well as an analysis of the language, style, meter, and prosody of the composition.
