Keywords: Greek Literature, Theocritus and Plato, Modes of enunciation in a literary work, Idyll VII

Abstract

Adopting Plato’s basic categories of literary work, the ancient scholia already speak of a γένος διηγηματικον, δραματικόν and μικτόν referring to the structure of Theocritus’ Idylls. In fact, that fluctuation between mimesis and narrative in the idylls can be regarded as one of the most remarkable elements in Theocritus’ poetics and in this article will be investigated from the viewpoint of its close relationship to Plato’ literary praxis as writer of philosophical dialogues, taking Id. 7 as an example.
