Abstract

From a linguistic study of Galens De antidotis we can affirm that this author displays a kind of language that registers undoubtedly within the framework of Greek koiné, since it is proved by the predominance of uses that can be thought structural in this variety, as the prepositional, pronominal or modal regime, which offered less possibilities for «an artificial» use of literary influence. Nevertheless, as all literary language demands, this one is shown enriched with contributions of the most prestigious models of the Past and, obviously, of the literary Attic, without restrictions as to any genre, even including the literary Jonic. Accordingly, the language of Galen responds to the principles of the Atticist movement: considering that the «pure attic», the characteristic variety from the colloquial level, cannot be reproduced by the authors of the Second Sophistic, we should understand this literary language under the principles of a classicist imitation more than of a use of the Attic dialect.
