Herodian 1.3.2-5: Marcus Aurelius and the images of tyranny. A new interpretation of a controversial passage
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the rhetorical function played by this passage in Herodian's History as part of the narrative setting of the last speech delivered by Marcus Aurelius and to offer an interpretation of the real meaning of these ‘images of tyranny’ (τυρανννίδος εἰκόνας) depicted in the emperor’s mind before his death.Downloads
