Abstract

This paper aims to give due recognition to the translation work of Professor Luis Gil Fernández. On the basis of his ideas on translation and on that of his translations themselves, we believe that his versions from Greek, Latin, German, English or French are all characterized by their philological rigor, their terminological accuracy, their fluency, elegance and adaptation to the style of the translated work, all qualities that we only find in those who have a deep knowledge of the source and target languages. That is why we have first examined his ideas on translation. We have also tried to draw a biographical and bibliographical profile that gives sufficient account of his choices in his work as a translator. We also wanted to show that Luis Gil’s translations fit easily within his philological and historiographical work, since they obey the same stimuli and intellectual tendencies. Finally, we have compiled a list of their translations accompanied by some observations on their timeliness, characteristics, and originality. In any case, this simple work wants, as I have already said, to pay tribute to Luis Gil for his unforgettable work, teaching and friendship.
