Abstract

Iamblichus’ Babyloniaka, a fragmentary novel written at the end of the second century AD and preserved primarily in a summary by Photius (Bibl. 94), and in a number of verbatim fragments, has not been studied so far form a linguistic point of view. The aim of this work is to fulfil, as far as it goes, that lacuna by describing and characterizing Iamblichus’ language at phonetic and morphological levels. From a thorough analysis of the main characteristics of both levels, it can be concluded that Iamblichus uses a prose grecque classicisante, with a mixture of attic and koine features.
