The Verb that Gave Name to Ontology. A Linguistic Approach to Classical Metaphysics
Abstract
This article puts forward a linguistic approach to classical ontology and suggests that the Greek concept of ‘being’ was determined by the properties of the verb εἰμί. On the one hand, it characterizes this word as a lexically neutral, supportive and stative verb with imperfective aspect. On the other hand, it relates such a characterization with the philosophical opposition between the permanence of being and the transience of becoming as well as with the polysemic expression of that which is.
