Abstract

The Ancient Greek –ις hypocoristic personal names show some relevant characteristic traits shared with other world languages’ hypocoristic names, particularly /–i/ expressive and affectionate suffix. Our aim in this paper is to identify a meaning for /–i/ noun stem suffix through a cross–linguistic and comparative analysis of the Greek clipped proper names with /–i/ ending in order to open new views for the semantic understanding of ι–stem noun category.
