The myth of Tantalus in the Maltese Anonymous (12th century)
Abstract
This paper presents a critical and annotated translation of selected verses from a supplicatory poem composed by an anonymous author exiled in the Maltese archipelago during the first half of the twelfth century. Particular attention is devoted to identifying and analysing the literary traditions and the potential sources that may have informed the author’s reworking of the myth of Tantalus. The study further examines how this myth is recontextualised within the poet’s personal narrative of exile.
