The conception of divinity in Numenius of Apamea
Abstract
The purpose of this text is to analyze and elucidate the issue that, we believe, contitutes the backbone of the philosophy of Numenius of Apamea (2nd century). This fundamental issue is the so-called doctrine of the three gods. Firstly, Numenius' revival of Platonic metaphysical doctrines is examined, along with their application to the question of the metaphysical origin and creation of the material world. Secondly, Numenius' formulation of the doctrine of the three gods is presented and analyzed, concluding that such a distinction adheres to ontological criteria -in the case of the First and Second God- and functional criteria -in the case of the Third God.
