Descartes’ limits in the mastery of nature
Abstract
This article analyzes the idea of “mastery of nature” that articulates Descartes’ philosophical
and scientific project. The main goal is to show that Descartes establishes limits in the domain that man
can exercise over creation, so that the abuse of nature is not legitimized. For this purpose, we analyze
the idea of mastery in scholasticism and the Renaissance. Subsequently, we reconstruct the Cartesian
arguments on which man’s domain is limited to the usufruct of nature.
