Proposal for a new taxonomy of classical Arabic and dialectal Moroccan paremies
Abstract
Arabic paremiography is deeply rooted in history and dates back to ancient times. However, paremiology, i.e. the part of the discipline concerned with the synchronic study of paremies, is very recent and is not yet based on solid scientific foundations. In fact, there is confusion in terms of terminology when it comes to grouping together the different statements that make up the Arab paremiological world and delimiting its boundaries. The aim of this article is to offer a new taxonomy of paremiological units valid for both classical Arabic and Moroccan dialectal Arabic. First, a state of the art of the paremiological studies carried out so far has been presented. Then, a critical study has been made of them in order to highlight their achievements and point out their shortcomings. The last task consists of applying scientific parameters to offer a very rigorous classification of the Arab and Moroccan paremiological universe.
