The assimilation of Iranian culture by five Abbasid caliphs
Abstract
This article studies how the Abbasids relied on the Iranians to achieve power, and once having achieved it, they continued to depend on them to rule their caliphate and it continues to show that, what in fact was a political union in the beginning, ended up resulting in the assimilation of certain Iranian cultural components by the Abbasids. This cultural-historical process began with the first Abbasid caliph and was continued by the following caliphs until reaching its zenith with Al-Ma’mūn. The article shows how, and in what aspects, five of the first Abbasid caliphs emulated the Sassanid kings and in general all of the Iranians.
