A list of the Hispanic Ecclesiastical provinces and their suffragan sees according to Escorial MS Ar. 1623, with a Nomina sedium episcopaliam in appendix (Simonet’s Catalogue revisited)
Abstract
This article1 undertakes a critical examination of the three documents employed by Simonet in his treatment of the ecclesiastical divisions of Hispania and their respective suffragan sees—namely, an excerptum from the Codex miscellaneus ovetensis, an extract from the so-called ‘Mozarabic Codex’ of Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae, and a further text drawn from al-Qānūn al-Muqaddas (The Holy Canon). The objective is to assess the accuracy of Simonet’s readings and, through a systematic comparison with the relevant sources, to re-establish—inasmuch as is feasible—certain interpretations which, in our view, are erroneous.
