Enrique Gómez Carrillo and El Cuento Nuevo
Abstract
First of all, this article presents and contextualizes the collection of short novels El Cuento Nuevo of which, to date, we only had references in catalogues. Then it focuses on determining, from the approach of cultural sociology, why a literary collection with a commercial character would select, for itslaunching, Enrique Gómez Carrillo and his short story Mi primer amor. The analysis of the story our hypothesis: decadent literary canon of Gómez Carrillo facilitates the description of the feminine sexual desire, but spreading the eroticism through the save channels of thebourgeois morality. With regards to the main quandary of modernism and modernity, this is to say the rationalist impulse versus the irrational impulse of intuition anddesire, the message of Gómez Carrillo is clearly positioned on the side of the dominant rationalism, thus reaching the edifying educational aim of literary journals, including El Cuento Nuevo.
