News from a Near Future: Posthuman Dystopias in the Contemporary Mexican Novel
Abstract
Imagining the future has recently become a prominent literary trend in Mexican narrative. Based on a critique of the neoliberal policies that have prevailed in the country since the 1980s, many authors consider in their novels the consequences of the misuse of scientific advances and the uncertain future of the human race in the age of technological revolution. The theory and philosophy of Posthumanism lie at the core of these texts which, in many cases, make use of the aesthetics and motifs of cyberpunk. Following the traditional structures of dystopic fiction, these narratives become both a warning of the dangers of the future and an implicit call for action in the present
