Keywords: solidarity, Hampâté Bâ, tradition, orality, initiation

Abstract

Through some of his speeches and writings, Amadou Hampâté Ba presents solidarity as a tool against the growing individualism that threatens West African societies. In order for African youth to live in harmony with their environment and with the other inhabitants of an increasingly global world, he recommends that thy delve into their rich oral sources, which extol the advantages of mutual help and condemn the damage caused by selfishness in society community. This article highlights the importance that the Malian scholar Hampâté Bâ attaches to solidarity, the role played by oral genres as transmitters of this principle and the presence of this prestigious social value in jantol, a genre closely related to initiation, to which Hampâté Bâ gave special attention.
