Words that Look Like Matter: Language as Textual Symptom in La place
Abstract
This paper sets out to read Annie Ernaux’s La place (1983) from the notions of “ideological unconscious” and “radical historicity of literature”, developed by the Marxist critic and philologist Juan Carlos Rodríguez. Through the analysis of the operation carried out by the French writer and, specifically, of the textual strategies that allow us to consider the paternal language an ideological symptom, it is shown that the political commitment of La place lies, from this perspective, in the type of historical subjectivity that the book articulates.
