Uprooting from Nature and Returning to Nature: Ecopoetic Approach to the Works of Camille Lemonnier
Abstract
From an ecopoetic perspective, this article examines texts (novels, travel albums) by the Belgian writer Camille Lemonnier. The rereading of Happe-Chair (1886), La Belgique (1888), Au cœur frais de la forêt (1900) from a contemporary ecological sensibility will highlight not only the critical aspect of these texts regarding pollution in the late nineteenth century, but also the utopian aspect of a return to nature. This essay will first demonstrate how the imaginary context created by Camille Lemonnier pits culture against nature, and second, it will examine the materialist writing in which this imaginary space is situated.
