A Journey of a Theory of Punctuation: Dolet’s Influence on Hart via Meigret
Abstract
John Hart was the first grammarian to write about English punctuation in the vernacular, doing so in two works: The Opening of the Unreasonable Writing of our Inglish Toung (1551) and An Orthographie (1569). Reformer of English orthography and orthoepist, it is established that he had taken inspiration from Louis Meigret. Nevertheless, an analysis of his theory of punctuation underlines the influence of another French humanist: Étienne Dolet. This article shows that the ideas of this other grammarian have surpassed geographic boundaries and illustrates how they reverberate in the first theory of punctuation in English.
