The Condition of the Jester in The King’s Fool by Mahi Binebine: Between Forgiveness and Resentment
Abstract
In Le Fou du roi (The King's Fool), Mahi Binebine gives us a fictionalized biography of his father, the fquih Mohamed, and introduces us, as very few texts have done, to the intimacy of Hassan II's court. This novel of reconciliation goes beyond the conflict with the father and rehabilitates him by giving him the right to speak. In doing so, it gives us a reflection on the condition of the courtier and a representation of the royal court and its inner workings. Without being a political fiction, the story of Hassan II's jester also sheds light on certain aspects of the king's personality.
