Abstract

Un homme obscur has been considered by many critics such as the ecological testament by Marguerite Yourcenar. The death that has chosen Nathanael on the outside, in the hollow of the islander forest is similar to a beast’s death. The transformation of the character that’s taking place all along the diegesis causes an interior and behavioral change. It is triggered by his successive encounters with the animal. It is the animals who are going to allow the weak young man to emancipate from civilizational constraints, to cross the borders set by the society, all for a union with the nature.
