Shout out the Secret: Niki de Saint Phalle’s intimate Stories
Abstract
In this article, we aim to approach Niki de Saint Phalle’s (1930-2002) literary production to show the keys to an intimate and violent creation that serves as therapy by revealing the traumas linked to the experience of sexual abuse in the family sphere and linked to a weakened state of mental health. The work is divided into four parts: in the first, we present the artist as a source of inspiration for other works; in the second, we inquire into the autobiographical forms and the author’s literary production; in the third, we proceed to an analysis of the story Mon secret (1994) that becomes a liberating cry from the weight of shame and guilt. We conclude with some reflections between the weak separation between private life and public exposure.
