The study of concession in French grammars
Abstract
This paper analyses how French grammars have dealt with the treatment of concession over a period of time that starts in the second third of the 20th century and extends up to the these days. Thus, this time span begins with the publication of the first edition of Grammaire de l’Académie Française (1932) and Le Bon Usage (1936), and ends with the grammars that have been published in the first two decades of the 21st century. Concession is undoubtedly a complex phenomenon. This is proved by a number of features, such as, the considerable amount of definitions that have been suggested, the relationship it bears to other related concepts (such as opposition or restriction), the list of units that may introduce it, along with the different parameters that have been used in its analysis, which are mainly based on the referentiality tradition.
