The prose poem and its relations with the theory of genres: a modern approach
Abstract
Our essay focuses on the possible relations between the prose poem and the theory of genres. The main obstacle confronted by the critic is, doubtlessly, the polymorphism of a genre that changes depending on the poet. Since the birth of the prose poem with Bertrand’s Gaspard de la Nuit by and Baudelaire’s Petits poèmes en, each author has praised its individual freedom in order to distance himself from the others. The result is a multiform corpus which is still difficult to analyse from a formalost perspective. Keeping this fact in mind, we will try to discern the place that corresponds to the prose poem regarding the ensemble of theoretical propositions composing the theory of genres, from Aristotle until today.
