Libertine love. Analysis of equivocal discourse in letter XXXVI of "Les Liaisons dangereuses"
Abstract
The letter XXXVI proves well that libertine characters in Les Liaisons dangereuses do not master the rules of the game. In this letter, we do not know if Valmont is still a libertine or if he is in love with Madame de Tourvel. Love goes beyond mere seduction, and it draws the Vicomte to a forbidden and unknown feeling. As the text progresses, the notion of victim and executioner become more and more ambiguous.Downloads
